*!^%+! Slang ^>!#~`

In our house we were not to use words such as: Gee, Gosh, Gollie, GeeWiz, Darn, and Geez. I remember being at your house, ____, and hearing them all the time.

>>We all inherited a rather colorful turn of phrase from my grandfather I think. (unfortunately 4 years in the army really enhanced my abilities in this area)

Those words were used rather frequently in our household until the 70's when someone pointed out to my mom that these words were created by vaudeville performers who weren't allowed to use the lord's name in vain. Since that seems pretty obvious we made some attempt to remove them from our vocabulary.<<

In our home, I would have had my mouth washed out with soap, been slapped across the face, confined to my room without dinner for use of slang! HOW do I know I would have been? I WAS! LOL....spent many nights hungry as a kid...! ...Any word that replaced "hell" (heck, etc) "damn" (dang, etc), "God" (Gol etc), or "Jesus" (geez, geewhiz, etc), (OR ANY BODY function!) was definitely NOT allowed! 6/97

I was not allowed to say any of the slang words that was common those days. (which by the way were mild to what we hear nowadays) i.e. If I said "Oh, my goodness" I was quickly reminded that there was no good in mankind.

My grandmother always said," My dear," My mother said "Oh, Mercy" and I don't remember my father ever using any words of any kind.

I remember my grandmother telling me, "____, you need your mouth washed out with soap!!" I'm so glad I don't have to have my mouth washed out, just my heart!!! As ____ said to-day, "I need that continuous cleansing." 6/97

My Dad was raised on the Boring convention ground, but from the stories I have heard from the early days, and even from my day, it wasn't a "Boring" place.

Years ago, probably in the 1930's, my dad being around ten, tells of the workers at preparations having a campaign to clean up their speech. They were trying so hard to not use slang, they watched their every word. One sister worker was working away when something went wrong, and she said, "Oh, Heavens". Then when she realized she had used some "slang", she came up with "Oh, Horrors". LOL [laughing out loud]

I grew up just thinking that the Gee Whiz, and Gollie Gee words were wrong. However, we could say "Man", "Good Grief", "Good Gravy" "Groovey", "Cool". In the 70's the words "Far Out" were being used. I took that phrase and used it quite a bit. Until one day, riding along in a car, a sister worker sitting in the back seat, tapped me on the shoulder and said that maybe I shouldn't use those words so much. She was so sweet about it, I just replied to her, "Okay, far out"!!!! LOL

Elden Tenniswood came to Boring convention every now and then. I always remember him telling the same stories and hearing the same sermon. He always referred to the fact that he had a real problem with swearing, and the use of "slang". I always ignored his advice because I didn't see his logic. E.T. said that you would use the slang word (Good Grief) in exchange for a dirty word, which wasn't true. I never thought of the dirty words.

Then I heard some years later when the workers got involved with the sale of "convention" property, at a meeting with some of the relatives involved, ET swore, and when being called on it, used the excuse that it wasn't a "religious meeting", it was a "business meeting". As if it was okay to do so at a business meeting. I guess he didn't get the victory that day. 6/97

Slang words and swear words were out of course too, heard it preached about at convention etc. 6/97
